The baby and the elephant

  • May. 29th, 2009 at 4:13 PM
Blackadder: Bravo!
Today is officially my last day of OISE. My B.Ed is finished, in two weeks there'll be a graduation ceremony which I'm not going to 'cause I hate those things, and by the end of June I should have my teaching qualification. YAY! Won't feel like I've finished until I get that.

I've applied to three jobs so far - one of them is at a school that's only two years old and was named after a famous Canadian humanitarian. I'd love to work there (the public schools here are amazing and progressive in their non-academic achievements; I mean, the things the kids do on global issues and current affairs etc. Extra-curricular, some of it) but I don't think my cover letter was very inspiring. *sigh* If only I'd gone to Kenya for my internship - but then I wouldn't be here for the job postings anyway.

I'm going back to Pathways next week, to help the students finish their soft toys and help out with tutoring. Two more weeks to the school year and then they have exams. And by that, I mean even the grade 10s have exams! This country is very big on exams - it's scary.

I have a scene from a movie stuck in my head and for the life of me I can't remember from the film is - it's a little bit old now, but I think it was popular. American, I'm pretty sure. Can't remember the storyline but the scene in my head is about a missing kid and they think he fell down the well, and the main character says something like "he's hiding in the barn, it's just a prank" and lo and behold, three days later they find him hiding in the barn and it was just a prank - which proved to the other main character some big truth. UGH. Was it Twelve Monkeys? I'm trying to think of movies where a character time travels.

I stole these photos from Mum's flickr site, since I'm not in Tassie to take my own: introducing my niece, Tamsyn, born on the 11th of May:

She's sleeping, not crying, in case you were wondering. She's so cute! After 14 hours of labour, you'd want a cute little bundle of joy to make up for it wouldn't you! I love the little jumper she's wearing; my sister knitted it for her before she was born. Aaaaaaand this is me Dad with his first grandchild :D

I finished the elephant (decided against adding the tusks cause they looked a bit stupid) and stuffed it - and was rather shocked to see how big it turned out!

I sewed Tamsyn's name on the side - if you click on it you'll get a bigger image to see it better. If I did it again I'd do marker stitches to guide my way, cause three letters in I realised the name was starting to go down the elephant's leg instead of across it's side. Whoops! Ah well.

Just to give some context on its size, I took a photo of me holding it (I felt a bit silly, but). Yeah, it's twice the size of the baby! Will probably scare the crap out of her. First time sewing something and it looks ridiculous. I am a failure.

Let's hope the monkey works out a bit better...

I think the elephant is great. I actually like that the name is twisting.

Twisting is certainly better than a straight line followed by a sinking letter! It grew on me :)

The elephant is brilliant! And so is getting to the graduation stage of anything... :)
So congrats on 2 counts...

Nah, babies are used to big scary things being pushed into their faces - like the faces of all their adult relatives!

Good point! Everything's big and new for a baby isn't it. And babies are pretty unjudgemental aren't they? ;)

Congrats on finishing your program!

I think your elephant is beautiful. Any baby would be lucky to have it. And don't worry... by the time the baby's actually able to use her arms to hold onto it, the elephant will no longer seem so huge. Babies do grow quickly!

By the way, your niece is one day older than my new baby. :)

Thanks Rachel!

You have a new baby??! Congratulations! I didn't know sorry. Details?

Thanks! I didn't really spread the news much on LJ, so I wouldn't have expected you to know. My baby was born on May 12 -- her name is Gianna.

Tamsyn is absolutely adorable! She's got a very cute nose. Congrats to your parents on their first grandkid, and to you on your first niece! Hope you get to see her soon....

Aw Gianna, that's so lovely. I haven't come across it before - does it have special meaning for you? Is she your first child?

I won't be able to meet Tamsyn until we go back for our wedding, next year in December. She'll be nearly two by then!

Thanks! Nope, not my first child; she's our third daughter. My husband is part Italian, and the baby is, um, the product of our vacation in Italy last summer (tehe!) so we picked an Italian name. Seemed fitting. :)

It must be tough living so far away from your family. I used to live 3,000 miles from mine, but once I had kids the distance, which had at first seemed refreshing, became more of a challenge and I moved back to the east coast.

But hey... congrats on the wedding! Guess that means it'll be a summer wedding. Do you have a place picked out already? (Oh my goodness... wedding details are so much FUN!)

That sounds so lovely - Italian holiday and all. I don't really want to have children in Canada with my family so far away either - my mum's had five kids and I could really use her expertise! Plus I think it's very comforting to have someone like that - whom you love and trust - with you because I can imagine I might worry about things! But I'm not sure if we'll ever be able to live in Tassie :(

Yeah we're having it at my parents' place in the country, in the garden. There are photos here. Don't have many details as yet. It's going to be very informal. I'm modelling it on the two outdoor, informal garden weddings I've been to that I really enjoyed, though they'll be even more informal!

Oh Shanni it's gorgeous! It's so much better than some of the presents Tamsyn has received too, and handmade things are always best.

Well done for finishing your course! I'm crossing my fingers that you'll find a position very soon.

*big hugs* Fer

I'm glad you think so :) We posted it yesterday. Couldn't afford a card sorry. It's a bit squished into the box and I'm worried the pressure on the seams will make them burst - I'd hate for you to have to repair it! That'd be a lousy gift! But the bigger box was way too expensive.

I'm sure it'll be fine. No card is fine too, you should see the lounge room at the moment - almost every surface has a card on it! She's a popular little girl. :o)

Congratulations on finishing your program, and all the best with your job applications.

The elephant is wonderful! It looks nice and cuddly, and I'm sure Tamsyn will love chewing on it, eventually. In that way that babies do when they have no teeth, at least. :D

You are most certainly NOT a failure! I cannot sew for beans and you've graduated again, so you're about three ahead of me ;) Congratulations, by the way!

And no idea what the movie is, sorry.

Also, your title made me think of "Elephants and Hens" from Black Books. They all drink lemonade...

And that was me!

Or someone pretending to be me. I actually have an LJ comment double, so just ignore that message...

...that is to say IF you got a message. Which I don't know that you did. In fact you have no reason to believe it was me that left that message. If there was a message.

...Hahaha, it's not Patrick, it's Ivan...

Wow, I hope you've seen Coupling.

I love Coupling, but I haven't seen it in about eight years so I wouldn't have recognised the quote without your help! Also love Black Books but all my DVDs are a different region code - how I miss that show! *sigh*

Thanks honey. You can't have long on your degree either yeah?

I'm glad you at least vaguely remember it -- otherwise I'd have looked mighty insane, and we couldn't have that, could we? *giggles worriedly*

Hahaha, I've still got two and a half years to go ... that's if I manage to stick it out :S And pass everything.

The world would stop spinning if mad howan ceased to be insane ;0

You'll do it, I have complete faith in you. Well, unless you don't want to, in which case you'll do whatever you want to! Okay so that wasn't terribly encouraging-sounding was it? But you will get there and you will do well and I'll be here when you do to say congrats!

*gets dizzy*

Aw, thank you m'dear! *laughs* It was encouraging, actually :D

I'm actually confused a bit — how long was your course? 'Cause you started it last year, right? Do they just condense it up and make you work a billion times harder than a longer course?
[info]aurillia wrote:
Jun. 1st, 2009 03:31 pm (UTC)
Yeah it was a year-long course. Actually, it was only 9 months long. It makes it very condensed! And kinda frantic. It doesn't help that, with this particular degree, it feels like a nine-month-long job interview. It was a new kind of stress for me!
[info]madhowan wrote:

But you should definitely get a job out of it, yeah? This is coming from the girl who will never get a job from her degree.

And you sound like you've been learning a lot, if nothing else.

I love the picture of your dad holding Tamsyn. Dunno why, but I always love seeing picture of grandparents holding babies. I think I just like the idea of things coming full circle.

But the movie you're thinking of is Twelve Monkeys, I remember because that was how Bruce Willis' character proved he was from the future the what was her name.

Overstuffed toy animals are the best! When they're too small you can't snuggle properly. She'll grow into it.

I can't believe you're already finished with your teaching degree! I tallied up my credits and I only need three more semesters, so I'm not far behind you!

That's a lovely way to put it! I love the grandparent-baby thing too, and Dad's really great with babies. He looks like he could be a bit awkward in this shot but in reality he's very comfortable with kids!

Thanks! It nagged at me for so long, it was only when I was typing it up that Twelve Monkeys occurred to me and I wasn't sure.

Yay for three more semesters! They'll fly by :)
